Our standards

How we rank

Most recovery-gear "best of" lists are ordered by whoever pays the biggest commission. Ours are ordered by what actually matters when you spend $3,000 to $9,000, heater and chiller quality, materials, warranty, and the running costs the brands would rather you didn't calculate. Here's the standard every verdict is held to.

Sauna and cold plunge equipment, the gear Fire and Ice ranks on cost and quality

The ranking process, step by step

  1. 01

    Shortlist the whole category

Every unit worth considering, pulled from live retailer listings, not just the ones with an affiliate program.

  2. 02

Pull the specs that decide the buy

Heater or chiller power, materials, warranty terms, EMF for infrared, sanitation and real usable size, checked against the current listing.

  3. 03

Compute the cost the brands hide

Real running cost (kW times hours at your rate) and the five-year total, alongside a wide read of verified owner reviews for reliability and noise.

  4. 04

Rank on that, and publish what to skip

Cost included, downsides named, contraindications flagged, and dated. Commission never moves the order.

Independent by design

Fire & Ice is funded by affiliate commission, when you buy through some of our links, the retailer pays us, at no extra cost to you. That funding model has one hard rule attached: commission never changes a ranking. We don't take payment for placement, we don't accept "sponsored" verdicts, and we'll happily tell you a popular, high-commission product isn't worth your money. A "best of" list with nothing to skip isn't being honest.

Led by a public-health specialist

Fire & Ice is founded and led by Craig Fearn, a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH) and former Wellbeing Ambassador for the Institute of Directors. Recovery and wellbeing are his field, which is why this site takes the practice seriously and refuses to overstate the science in the same breath. When a claim about cold or heat is genuinely supported, we cite the research; when it's hype, we say so.

What we weigh

Cold plunges & ice baths

  • Chiller performance, cooldown speed and how cold it truly holds
  • Power draw and the resulting running cost
  • Sanitation (ozone, UV, manual chlorine) and ongoing filter cost
  • Build, insulation, seat depth and real usable size
  • Warranty terms and what's actually covered
  • Owner-reported reliability and noise

Saunas

  • Heater quality and power, and whether it needs a 240V circuit
  • Even-heat performance (where the shape helps or hurts)
  • Materials, timber species, heater type, glass, EMF for infrared
  • Assembly effort and whether one person can manage it
  • Running cost per session and per month
  • Warranty and long-term durability from owner feedback

We publish the running cost

Almost no one does this, and it's often the number that decides the purchase. For every category we work out the real cost to run, electricity per session and per month, plus maintenance, and let you plug in your own usage and local electricity rate in the cost-to-run calculator. A cheaper unit that costs more to run is not the cheaper unit.

Sourced and current

Specifications come straight from each manufacturer and are checked against current listings; performance and reliability notes are drawn from a wide read of verified owner reviews, not a single source. Every guide carries the date it was last reviewed, and when a model is discontinued or a price shifts materially, we update the page rather than leaving a stale year-stamp on old content.

On health claims

Cold and heat exposure have real, studied effects, and a lot of overstated ones. We cite named research for physiological claims, flag where the evidence is thin or the ideal protocol isn't settled, and call out contraindications (cardiovascular conditions, pregnancy) rather than pretending everyone should jump in. This is buyer guidance, not medical advice. Talk to your doctor before starting.
